Bio

Juan Carlos Payano Bio

Juan Carlos “Baby Pacquiao” Payano was highly decorated as an amateur fighter in the Dominican Republic, competing in two Olympic Games and twice winning silver at the Pan American Games. Since turning pro in 2010, he quickly ascended the ranks at 118 pounds and won a world title in 2014.

Juan Carlos Payano competed in two Olympics and twice won silver at the Pan American Games as an amateur fighter.

A man of many medals

Hailing from the Dominican Republic, Payano first distinguished himself as an amateur by winning a silver medal at the 2003 Pan American Games.

After competing in the 2004 Olympics, where he lost in the second round to France’s Jérôme Thomas, the southpaw later took home the gold at the 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games.

He then earned another silver at the 2007 Pan American Games before qualifying for a second Olympics in 2008, when he lost to Italy’s Vincent Picardi in the second round.

Juan Carlos Payano
Juan Carlos Payano upset Anselmo Moreno in September 2014 to win a world championship in his 16th professional fight.

Storming to a world championship

Never lacking in confidence, Payano has long compared himself to the best. “My style is similar to Manny Pacquiao—that’s why I’m ‘Baby Pacquiao,’” Payano told ESPN prior to his 2013 clash with Jundy Maraon. “But I feel like I’m more organized with my punches, have better technique and better fighting ability.”

Payano has worked hard to live up to that designation in the ring, blitzing his first 15 opponents to set up a September 2014 title fight with crafty Panamanian Anselmo Moreno, a champ at 118 pounds for six years who was making his 13th title defense against Payano.

Payano was cut over his right eye from an accidental clash of heads in Round 2, and the ringside doctor ruled he could not continue after Round 6. Payano was ahead on all three judges’ scorecards, winning a technical decision and a world championship.

RE-LIVING A RIVALRY

On August 2, 2015, Payano took on undefeated, former Olympic rival Rau'shee Warren at Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida.  Warren and Payano went toe-to-toe in an old-fashioned brawl that ended in a split decision for Payano, where the three judges could only find consensus in five of the 12 rounds.

Payano lost a point in third and was knocked down in the 12th, while Warren was flagged for an intentional foul in the ninth.

It was enough to affect the outcome of a narrow tilt that saw both fighters firing away with abandon. In the end, Payano did just enough. He came away with two 113-111 cards to a 115-109 tally for Warren on the third.

A rematch was in order and fight fans got their wish as the two met again on June 18, 2016, at UIC Pavilion in Chicago. It was another hard-fought affair but, this time, Warren dethroned  Payano via majority decision.

A DANGEROUS CONTENDER

Payano rebounded with three straight wins. On January 13, 2017, he delivered a seventh-round TKO over Isao Gonzalo Carranza at Hialeah Park Racing & Casino in Hialeah, Florida. On August 22, 2017, Payano impressed again, winning a 10-round unanimous decision over Alexis Santiago at Sam's Town Hotel in Las Vegas. Payano would close out the year with a 10-round unanimous decision over Mike Plania at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

But on October 7, 2018, Payano suffered a TKO loss to WBA World Bantamweight Champion Naoya Inoue. Payano returned in March 2019 with an eight-round unanimous decision over Damien Vasquez. However, he would suffer another defeat on July 20, 2019, this time at the hands of undefeated former champion Luis Nery.

Payano looked far better on September 26, 2020, but came up short against Daniel Roman, suffering a 12-round unanimous decision on SHOWTIME PPV. Then on December 19, 2020, he lost a seven-round technical decision to Gary Antonio Russell when Payano suffered a bad cut due to an accidental clash of heads in the fifth and the fight went to the scorecards.

Payano has since rebounded by winning two straight. Both were fifth-round technical decisions as he defeated Luis de la Rosa in July 2021 and then Raymond Tabugonnin in August 2021.
