Anthony Dirrell ready for a brawl with Mexican tough guy Marco Antonio Rubio
Anthony Dirrell wasn’t fighting a sponge, because we all know that sponges are staunch pacifists. Still, the way the other dude in the ring with him soaked up his punishment and just kept on coming suggested some kind of preternatural absorptive powers.

Tomoki Kameda Bio
Tomoki Kameda followed in the footsteps of older brothers Koki and Daiki in becoming a professional boxer, except he left their native Japan at age 15 to live and train in Mexico. “El Mexicanito” won a 118-pound world title in 2013, helping the Kameda brothers become the first trio of siblings to simultaneously hold world championships.
Kameda grew up in a tough area of Osaka, Japan, along with his older brothers, Koki and Daiki. Their father, Shiro, dreamt that all three sons would grow up to win world titles in boxing.
Tomoki Kameda’s early nickname in Japan, where he went 35-1-1 as an amateur, was “Kameda-ke Saishū Heiki,” which translates to “The Ultimate Weapon of the Kamedas.”
After the Japan Boxing Commission indefinitely banned Shiro Kameda for threatening officials in 2007, Tomoki left home at age 15 to live and train in Mexico.
The rise of ‘El Mexicanito’
Tomoki Kameda wanted to compete in the 2008 Olympics, but he was too young to participate, so he chose to begin his professional career.
He made his pro debut in Ciudad Nezahualcoyotl, Mexico, in November 2008, at the age of 17, gaining a second-round knockout of Alejandro Moreno. Kameda quickly built up his record fighting solely in Mexico and Japan, going 9-0 in 2009 alone.
Employing an aggressive style favored by so many admired Mexican fighters, Kameda earned the nickname “El Mexicanito” (“The Little Mexican”) in his adopted homeland.
After winning a 10-round unanimous decision over Mexican veteran Arturo Camargo in July 2010, Kameda fought undefeated Belgian contender Stephane Jamoye in August, and won their 10-round fight by split decision.
Kameda continued to build on his perfect record with five wins in 2011 and four more in 2012, again fighting in either Mexico or Japan.
Winning: A family tradition
In August 2013, Kameda fought for the first time outside of his native and adopted countries when he faced 118-pound champion Paulus Ambunda in Cebu, Philippines.
Kameda pounded Ambunda with body shots and dominated the 12-round fight, winning a unanimous decision to become the third Kameda brother to earn a world title.
When brother Daiki beat Rodrigo Guerrero in September 2013 to become a world champion at 115 pounds, the Kamedas became the first trio of siblings to ever hold titles simultaneously. (Oldest brother Koki, who has won titles in three weight divisions, was a 118-pound champion from December 2010 through December 2013.)
Coming to America
Kameda fought for the first time in the United States in July 2014, when he defended his title against Pungluang Sor Singyu at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Kameda was impressive in his U.S. debut as he gained a seventh-round KO.
Kameda stayed in the States for his next fight, against Alejandro Hernandez at Chicago’s UIC Pavilion in November 2014.
Kameda dominated the first half of the fight before Hernandez rallied in the latter rounds, but Kameda won the 12-round bout to retain his title and push his record to 31-0.
No longer perfect
Kameda made his Premier Boxing Champions debut in a fight against British 118-pound champion Jamie McDonnell in Hidalgo, Texas, on May 9, 2015.
Kameda dominated the early rounds and felled McDonnell with a right hand in the third round.
McDonnell started to get back in the fight in the fifth round, and used his jab effectively to slow Kameda as the bout progressed.
The 12-round fight went the distance, and all three judges scored the bout 114-113 in favor of McDonnell, giving Kameda his first professional loss.
Kameda and McDonnell would duel once again on September 6, 2015, at American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas. Again, Kameda would fall short, losing a 12-round unanimous decision.
Following back to back losses, Kameda took a 13-month furlough from boxing. On October 15, 2016, he flattened Edgar Alfredo Martinez in one round at Deportivo G2 in Mexico.
Kameda’s next four bouts would all occur at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan. On March 10, 2017, he won a 10-round unanimous decision over Pipat Chaiporn. That August, he won another 10-round unanimous decision, this time over Ivan Morales.
Kameda notched his third straight 10-round unanimous decision win versus Daniel Noriega in May 2018. On November 12, 2018, he won a 12-round unanimous decision over Abigail Medina.
The wins set Kameda up for another world title shot. On July 13, 2019, he took on undefeated WBC World Super Bantamweight Champion Rey Vargas at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. Kameda started strong but the lanky Vargas used his reach and boxing skills to keep him at bay and retain his title via unanimous decision.
