An ABC Nightline special on Canelo Álvarez highlights how boxing's pound for pound king is not only using his incredible power in the ring, but outside the ring to uplift Latinos everywhere.
WBA, WBC and WBO World Super Middleweight Champion Canelo Álvarez isn't just boxing's pound for pound king and the biggest name in the sport. The four-division champion is using his popularity to be the voice for his Mexican people, as well as the voice for Latinos all around the world. An ABC News "Nightline" special spotlights Canelo's ascent to the pinnacle and how he is using his platform to give back.
“I think I’m at the point where I can have that power to speak for others and how I’m doing it is not just because you’re Latino or Mexican, people can treat you differently," Canelo said.
Canelo returns to the ring against undefeated IBF World Super Middleweight Champion Caleb "Sweethands" Plant on Saturday, November 6, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, live on SHOWTIME pay-per-view (9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT). The bout will crown the first ever undisputed super middleweight champion. Just as important for Canelo is the fight Latinos face globally, a fight Canelo has championed.
“You have the power to speak out and raise your voice for all people," said Canelo. "I think it’s important to do it in due time, to avoid being imprudent, but in the opportune time speak up, and speak for others."
