In this installment of Trainer Tuesday, rising 147-pound star Errol Spence Jr. and head trainer Derrick James discuss what makes them work so well together.
James, who was a professional fighter from 1992-2008, began working with Spence as an amateur. The relationship began when Spence’s father, Errol Spence Sr., wanted to convert his son’s style from that of an amateur to one of a pro, getting him ahead of the curve.
Errol Spence Jr. and James clicked from the start, as James taught his pupil how to attack his opponents more regularly with body shots and jabs.
Now, Spence Jr. is regarded as one of the sport’s most well-rounded up-and-comers, noted for his devastating ability to break down an opponent with body shots.
Spence Jr., who is 16-0 with 13 knockouts, faces the toughest test of his fledgling career Saturday night, when he faces veteran Roberto Garcia, who is 37-3 and has never been stopped early in his 40 pro fights. Spence Jr. aims to be the first to do so with the game plan that he and James have worked this camp to perfect.
