John “The Gladiator” Molina Jr. has always possessed knockout power, and nearly all of his opponents have found that out the hard way. The Covina, California, native was defeated in his bid for the 135-pound title in 2012, and after some subsequent setbacks, the hard-hitting fighter is seeking to climb to the top at 140 pounds.

Boxing in the blood

John Molina Jr. has always kept moving forward, both inside and outside of the ring.

Despite some setbacks in recent years, the hard-punching Californian has never lost sight of his quest to become one of the world’s top fighters.

Molina has boxing in his blood.

His father, John Sr., and grandfather Ysidro were both amateur fighters, and the love of the sport was passed down from them.

Moving at a brisk pace

During high school in Covina, California, Molina hadn’t dedicated himself to the fight game entirely, as he also competed in wrestling and track and field.

After graduating in 2001, however, he began to focus on his fighting career.

Molina had his first amateur bout in 2002, and after going 22-2 with 17 knockouts, and winning the California Golden Gloves, he turned professional.

Molina made his pro debut at 140 pounds in March 2006, gaining a second-round KO of Lester Balmores in Maywood, California.

Climbing the ladder

Despite his limited amateur background, Molina progressed rapidly as a young pro.

After winning his first seven bouts, he experienced his first adversity.

Fighting at 135 pounds, Molina was floored less than two minutes into his August 2007 fight against Ron Boyd in San Jacinto, California, but quickly stormed back to gain a first-round KO.

Molina continued to pile up victories, and entered his November 2009 fight against Martin Honorio in Temecula, California, with an 18-0 record.

Honorio, a huge underdog with more experience, outboxed Molina and won a 10-round unanimous decision.

Experiencing highs and lows

Molina rebounded from the loss with six straight wins, and earned a shot at 135-pound champion Antonio DeMarco in Oakland, California, in September 2012.

DeMarco rocked Molina with a straight left hand in the opening moments of the first round, and knocked out the challenger.

Once again, Molina bounced back from disappointment, scoring a fourth-round KO of Dannie Williams in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in January 2013.

His momentum was quickly stopped, though, when he lost a 10-round unanimous decision to Andrey Klimov in Shelton, Washington, in June 2013.

Molina, living up to his nickname of “The Gladiator,” continued to battle in the ring.

He ended 2013 with two victories, gaining a 10th-round TKO of Mickey Bey in Las Vegas in July, and knocking out Jorge Pimentel in Round 2 of their scheduled 10-round bout in Ontario, California, in November.

Dealing with defeat

In 2014, he knocked down title contender Lucas Martin Matthysse in the second and fifth rounds of their scheduled 12-round bout in Carson, California, in April, but the Argentinian floored Molina in rounds 8 and 10 before scoring an 11th-round KO.

Molina followed up with a fight in September in Las Vegas against former two-division world champion Humberto Soto.

Molina, who had two points deducted for low blows, was unable to solve the veteran Mexican fighter and lost a 10-round unanimous decision.

John Molina Jr. and Adrien Broner

Tangling with Broner on the first PBC card

Molina was given the honor of fighting on the first Premier Boxing Champions card, taking on Adrien Broner in a 140-pound bout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on March 7, 2015.

The fight was also watched by a prime-time national television audience on NBC.

Molina started slowly, but picked up the pace in the third and fifth rounds to challenge Broner.

Broner proved to much to handle, though, and won a 12-round unanimous decision to hand Molina his sixth career defeat.
